What happens when you get in touch
1. A quick conversation
We'll ask what you're seeing, where the house is, and roughly how old it is. If you have photos of the problem, they help us understand it before we visit.
2. A visit to your property
We come out, look at the brickwork, and look for the cause behind the damage, not just the damage itself. If a gutter, downspout or drainage problem is behind it, we'll tell you.
3. A written estimate
You get a written estimate that explains the work, the materials and how we'll do it. On older homes, that includes the mortar we plan to use and how we'll match your brick and joints.
4. Scheduling the work
Once you're ready, we book the job. Some work, especially lime mortar repointing, is best done in the right weather, and we'll talk you through timing.

What to Expect When We Look at Old Brick
When we come out to an older Richmond house, the first thing we look at is the mortar. Most homes built before about 1940 were laid in soft lime mortar, and the right repair depends on what's in the wall now. Is the old lime still sound? Has somebody patched it in hard gray cement? Is water getting in from a gutter, a sill or a cracked chimney crown?
We'll tell you plainly what we see. Often that's a smaller job than you feared, like repointing one weather wall or one chimney instead of the whole house. Where repointing is needed, we'll explain the mortar we'd use and why: a lime mortar softer and more breathable than your brick, matched to the original in color, sand and joint finish, so the wall can dry out the way it was built to. Lime cures slowly and needs protecting from frost and hot sun, so we'll talk through timing too. The estimate comes in writing and costs nothing.

Are estimates really free?
Yes. We come out, look at the work and give you a written estimate at no charge.
Do you work weekends?
We're open 7 days a week, 8am to 6pm.
Do you take small jobs?
Yes. A few loose bricks or a single step are worth fixing early, before they turn into bigger repairs.
Do you work outside Richmond?
Yes, across Henrico, Chesterfield and Hanover counties.
We'd rather quote you for doing it once, properly. If you want the job done right the first time, look no further. We'd rather do it once, the old way, than come back in a few years to fix somebody's shortcut. The National Park Service's guidance on repointing historic masonry (Preservation Brief 2) says a well-done repointing job should last at least 30 years, and preferably 50 to 100. Historic England warns that hard, cement-rich mortar on old brick traps moisture and speeds up the decay of the brick around it. So we choose the lime mortar to suit the wall, fill the joints properly and let them cure slowly. Work built to last decades.
