A damaged chimney lets water into your home, drops loose brick onto the roof, and gets more expensive to fix the longer it waits. Heritage Masonry & Brick repairs brick chimneys across Richmond, VA, with a focus on the older homes in the Fan, the Museum District, Church Hill and the city's other historic neighborhoods. We handle chimney repointing, brick replacement, crowns, flashing, caps and full rebuilds. Every repair includes mortar and brick color matching, so new mortar and replacement bricks blend in with the original chimney.
We're a family of traditional masonry contractors with over 25 years of experience, and brick is all we know. We've repaired hundreds of chimneys. We're licensed and insured in Virginia, and our work comes with a 5-year guarantee on labor and materials.
Brick is all we know. We do chimneys the old way: matched brick, lime mortar to suit the chimney, and crowns built to throw water clear of the brick. Our family roots go back to Scotland, where building in stone and brick with lime mortar has centuries of tradition. For repointing older chimneys, see our lime mortar repointing page.

We repair all types of residential brick chimneys, including:
A chimney gets more weather than any other part of your house. It sits above the roofline, catches rain from every direction, and goes through every freeze and thaw of a Richmond winter. On homes built a century or more ago, that exposure has been going on for a long time.
Many older Richmond homes were built with soft brick laid in lime mortar. Lime mortar is meant to be the weak point: it lets moisture escape and gives a little as the house moves, so the mortar wears away over the years instead of the brick. That's how the system is meant to work, but it means the joints eventually need repointing. Our Repointing & Tuckpointing page explains how this is done. Once they open up, water gets into the chimney, freezes, expands and pushes the brick apart. This freeze-thaw cycle is the main reason chimney tops loosen and lean.
Other problems we see often:
A chimney is the most exposed brickwork on any house. It takes rain on all four sides, frost on top, and heat and moisture from inside. On older Richmond homes the chimney was laid in soft brick and lime mortar, and that's how it should be repaired. The lime joint is softer and more breathable than the brick, so the stack can dry out and move a little without cracking the brick. When the joints wear, you repoint them, and the brick survives.
Up top, the repair mortar has to be breathable but stand up to the weather, so it is matched to the original and the exposure. The crown is a different job. It's the cap that sheds water, so it has to be solid, sloped and overhang the brick with a drip edge, so water falls clear instead of running down the face. A cracked flat crown or a hard cement patch on the brick below is what ruins most of the chimneys we rebuild.
The chimneys in the Fan, Church Hill, Jackson Ward, Oregon Hill and along Monument Ave are part of what makes those streets look the way they do. A chimney repaired with the wrong brick or a hard grey cement mortar stands out from the street, and it can damage the original brick around it.
We repair historic chimneys the way they were built: with lime mortar, matched brick and joints tooled to look like the originals. Chimney work is often part of a larger job on an older home. See our Historic Brick Restoration page for more. That keeps the house looking right, and it lets the old brick keep breathing so the repair lasts. Parts of Richmond are designated City Old and Historic Districts, where exterior changes can need approval. If your home is in one, check with the City of Richmond before major visible work such as a rebuild.
If you notice any of these, call (804) 324-6304 for a free estimate. Catching problems early usually means repointing instead of a rebuild.

Common signs are cracked or missing mortar, loose or flaking bricks, water leaks near the chimney or fireplace, white staining, a leaning chimney, or bits of brick and mortar on the roof. Fixing these early helps avoid bigger, more expensive repairs.
Yes. We match the color and texture of your existing brick and mortar as closely as possible, so the repair blends in with the rest of the chimney. On older homes we use a lime mix traditional mortar that suits the original brick.
Old brick is softer than modern brick. Lime mortar is softer still, so it flexes and lets moisture out. Hard cement mortar does neither, and it can force water into the brick, which then cracks and flakes. Using lime mortar protects the brick, which is the part you want to keep.
It depends on the condition of the brick. If the bricks are sound and the problem is worn mortar, repointing is usually enough. If the top of the chimney is loose, leaning or badly spalled, the top courses or the whole chimney above the roofline may need rebuilding. We'll show you what we see and explain the options.
Efflorescence is the white, powdery deposit left when water moves through brick and carries salts to the surface. The stain itself isn't harmful, but it means water is getting in. We find where it's coming from and fix it.
Yes. We give free, no-obligation estimates for chimney repairs throughout Richmond and the surrounding counties. We'll inspect your chimney, explain what it needs, and give you a written estimate before any work begins.
A chimney repointed in the right lime and topped with a proper crown should stand a long time before it needs us again. If you want the job done right the first time, look no further. We'd rather do it once, the old way, than come back in a few years to fix somebody's shortcut. The National Park Service's guidance on repointing historic masonry (Preservation Brief 2) says a well-done repointing job should last at least 30 years, and preferably 50 to 100. Historic England warns that hard, cement-rich mortar on old brick traps moisture and speeds up the decay of the brick around it. So we match the mortar to the wall, fill the joints properly and let them cure slowly. Work built to last decades.
